- How to install the demo version of HDDRIVER:
-
- Make sure that you have an XHDI compatible hard disk driver installed.
- XHDI compatible are current versions of CBHD, HuSHI, hdpSTACK and HDDRIVER,
- of course. If none of the drivers listed above is installed, copy the file
- HDDRIVER.PRG on a floppy disk. Boot your system from floppy disk and start
- the program HDDRIVER.PRG.
- Now start HDDRUTIL and choose "Install" from the "Harddisk" menu. A dialog
- box is displayed and you have to choose drive C: from the list of drives and
- press OK. Reboot your Atari in order to activate HDDRIVER.
- HDDRIVER initially checks only one drive on each bus (IDE device 0, SCSI
- device 0, ACSI device 0). If you have more drives you have to configure
- HDDRIVER accordingly. Choose the "Device Numbers" menu entry and select the
- file HDDRIVER.SYS on partition C: in the file selector box. Now you can
- activate all valid device numbers and leave the dialog box with OK.
- If you want HDDRUTIL to automatically locate all connected drives
- automatically select "Auto Configuring".
- You can remove HDDRIVER by installing another hard disk driver according
- to the installation instructions for this driver.
-
- NOTE:
- Drives that were partitioned with old versions of the ICD hard disk
- software are not AHDI compatible if they have more then 4 partitions.
- In this case the installation of an AHDI compatible driver requires
- repartitioning your drive with an AHDI compatible software package or
- converting the existing partitioning scheme to an AHDI compatible scheme
- with ICD2AHDI.
- Don't use the MagiC write back daemon if you make use of non-blocking
- data transfers. Preemptive multitasking should be activated by the MagiC
- timeslice CPX when using non-blocking transfers. So please remove the
- line with the TSL keyword from the file MAGX.INF. The MagiC README provides
- more information. The most important thing to keep in mind when using non-
- blocking DMA transfers: All DMA drivers in the system have to support this
- transfer mode. If this is not the case, data may be corrupted. MetaDOS and
- the drivers for the SLM laser printer don't support background DMA.
- When using bus arbitration or initiator identification (some drives require
- this, especially the newer Quantum drives) you have to choose a unique SCSI
- ID for TT and Falcon. TOS can't boot from these drives. On the Atari ST
- drives that require initiator identification will work with the LINK96
- host adapter by Norbert Wieczorek but not with any other adapter.
- Most Falcon computers have problems with their SCSI hardware especially with
- high screen resolutions. Atari proposed several hardware fixes (clock patch)
- and your dealer should know about them. As HDDRIVER drives Falcon SCSI with
- maximum speed, you might encounter this problem even if you didn't notice it
- before.
-
- The folder XHDI contains the official version of the XHDI specification
- (also in English) as well as the German XHDI documentation in the ST Guide
- hypertext format. The hypertext files in this folder may only be copied
- together with the file XHDI-125.ZOO.
-
-
- Limitations of the HDDRIVER demo version:
-
- - Data can't be written on other partitions than C:.
- - Writing data is much slower than in the unlimited version. Data are read,
- however, with maximum speed.
- - SCSI drives can't be configured regarding cache and parity settings.
- - Read/Write protection of ZIP and JAZ drives can't be configured.
- - Formatting and Partitioning are not supported.
- - No software based write protection.
- - No additional tools that come with the full verision (ID check software,
- configuration software etc.)
-
-
- The most important features of the unlimited version:
-
- - Driver for Atari SH/Megafile, SCSI and IDE/EIDE drives
- - Works with hard disks and removable media (MOD, SyQuest, ZIP, JAZ, ...)
- - Media with more than 512 physical bytes per sector (especially some MOD
- media) are supported. On the ST an ICD compatible host adapter is required
- in order to use this feature, e. g. the LINK96 by Norbert Wieczorek.
- - Formatting of SCSI drives
- - Support for DOS-formatted media
- - DOS compatible partitioning, also for partitions > 32 MByte (MagiC 5 or
- Big-DOS are required in order to use these partitions with the Atari)
- - Reconstruction of partition data in case the root sector was corrupted
- - XHDI compatible, supports all XHDI 1.26 calls
- - Write protection for single partitions and for boot and root sectors.
- - ZIP and JAZ media can be read or write protected on a password basis.
- - SCSI initiator identification and bus arbitration support (TT and Falcon
- only)
- - Parity check with TT and Falcon SCSI gives a maximum of data security
- - You can choose the boot partition by pressing a key or depending on the
- computer's SCSI ID.
- - Fast booting because you can configure the device numbers to be checked
- - Supports two IDE/EIDE units (master and slave) of any capacity
- - Arbitrary order of devices
- - Optional "Fast ACSI" mode gives maximum transfer rates with most SCSI
- drives connected to the ACSI bus
- - Special support for ICD compatible host adapters. This allows drives
- > 1 GByte to be used on the ACSI bus without limitations.
- - Important parameters of SCSI-2 drives can be configured (Cache, Parity,
- Unit Attention).
- - With the MagiC operating system you have direct access to 23 partitions
- - With BIGDOS up to 29 partitions are possible
- - Non-blocking DMA transfers with MagiC 3 or newer. Applications keep on
- running while data are being transferred.
- - CPX and ACC for configuring HDDRIVER
- - Software for automatic parking of hard disk drives is included as well as
- software for partitioning and for scanning devices on the ACSI and SCSI
- bus
